Brian & Betty are flying back from San Fansisco today, so Janet & I are now alone on our voyage. It feels strangely quiet on board while Jan does a last laundry before we leave Monterey. Don't know quite where we are with news.
Last week's trip from S.F. to Monterey (just under 100 miles) should be an easy 24hr sail, but we ran out of wind and motored much of the way. Met whales under the Golden Gate. Heard Monterey harbour from well out to sea by the barking of sea lions. These 500 to 1,000 pound animals were all over the docks, jetties & fishing boats, and particularly under the comercial pier where the fish market is. All wildlfe here looks too big - pelicans, seals, sea otters. I forget how many tons of sqid are lured up each night by electric lights then netted.
Formalities were very personal & friendly at the habourmaster's office and they found us a slip in the municipal marina just a few inches wider than Harmonica.
Got out the folding bicyles the first day and rode to Carmel via the Pebble Beach and other golf courses - wealthy looking neihgbourhood!
Second day was shopping & sightseeing. Aquqrium is excellent.
Next B & B rented a car and we all headed to Hearst Castle & then Morrow Bay, which we might use as an anchorage on the way down. Spectacular coast road.
Today we said farewells, and walked back along the sea front to an interent cafe to do banking, look for guide books for Southern California moorages.
Tomorrow its back through the fog to 24 hr. watches.
